Project Feature: Home Organization with a Focus on Function and Personal Touches

Every home has its own personality, shaped by the furnishings, artwork and personal belongings collected over time. Sometimes, creating a more organized and functional space is simply a matter of finding a better place for the things you already have.

Recently, I had the opportunity to help a client organize several areas of their home, focusing on improving the arrangement of existing furnishings, creating more intentional displays and finding ways to highlight treasured personal items.

The Goal

The objective was to:

  • Organize three living room bookshelves and the TV stand, working within the client’s preferences and guidelines
  • Improve the organization and appearance of the desk area
  • Shuffle and hang artwork throughout the home
  • Highlight and display treasured trinkets wherever possible

Rather than introducing new pieces, this project focused on making better use of existing furnishings and belongings while creating more intentional arrangements throughout the home.

The Process

We began by reorganizing the three bookshelves and TV stand, considering both function and appearance. Working within the client’s guidelines, items were rearranged to create more organized displays while finding opportunities to bring treasured trinkets into focus.

The desk area was also reorganized to create a more intentional and functional workspace, while artwork throughout the home was shuffled and rehung to explore new placements.

A few additional adjustments helped bring everything together. In the dining corner, a small vignette was created to highlight cookbooks while giving a relocated kitchen lamp a new home. The mirror above the dining room drop area was also repositioned to better reflect light.

The Result

With the shelving, desk area and artwork addressed, several spaces throughout the home now have a more organized and intentional feel. Personal items have greater visibility, everyday spaces are more functional, and existing furnishings have been put to better use.

The dining corner vignette also created a new opportunity to display items that might otherwise have been tucked away.

A Few Ideas to Build On

A few recommendations were identified to build on the work completed, including:

  • Introducing artificial greenery to the vase on top of the square bookshelf
  • Adding plants to the bookshelf closest to the window
  • Introducing additional picture frames to the two shelves along the couch wall
  • Creating a gallery wall in the hallway

These additions would bring further visual interest and help create a more cohesive feel throughout the home.

Final Thoughts

One of my favorite aspects of home organization is finding new possibilities in the things people already own. Artwork, treasured keepsakes, books and everyday furnishings all contribute to making a home personal. Thoughtful organization can help bring those pieces together, making spaces easier to use while giving favorite belongings the opportunity to stand out. Sometimes, it’s not about having less. It’s about finding a better place for what you have.
