Project Feature: A Closet Refresh Focused on Function and Personality

Every home has spaces that work hard behind the scenes. Closets are often among the most-used spaces in a home, yet they can easily become catch-alls for items that no longer belong, making them less functional and less enjoyable to use each day.

Recently, I had the opportunity to help a client refresh their primary closet with a focus on improving both function and appearance.

The Goal

The objective was simple:

  • Increase functionality within the space
  • Create a more visually appealing environment
  • Highlight and display favourite clothing and accessories

Rather than pursuing a complete makeover, this project focused on making better use of what was already there while identifying opportunities for future improvements.

The Process

We began by editing the space and removing items that no longer served a purpose in the closet. Donation items, paperwork, photographs, and other unrelated belongings were removed to create a cleaner foundation.

From there, clothing was reorganized by style and colour, making everyday items easier to find while creating a more cohesive visual appearance. Seasonal and occasional-use items were grouped together, and handbags were displayed more intentionally to showcase pieces the homeowner loves.

Small adjustments to shelving also helped improve accessibility and maximize available storage.

The Result

By simplifying the space and creating clearer zones for different categories of belongings, the closet became easier to navigate and more enjoyable to use.

Favourite pieces are now more visible, everyday items are easier to access, and the overall space feels lighter, calmer, and more intentional.

The transformation serves as a reminder that meaningful change doesn’t always require a complete renovation. Often, thoughtful editing and organization can dramatically improve how a space functions and feels.

Looking Ahead

As part of the project, several recommendations were identified for future implementation, including:

  • Updated jewelry display and storage
  • New decorative mirror installation
  • Hat display hooks
  • Updated hardware and lighting
  • New storage baskets and accessories

These additions would further enhance both the functionality and character of the space over time.

Final Thoughts

One of my favourite aspects of refresh projects is helping clients rediscover spaces they already have.

Sometimes the most impactful transformation comes not from adding more, but from thoughtfully editing what exists and creating room for the things that matter most.
