Even small spaces can have a big impact when you get creative. Recently, a local non-profit asked me to update an extra workspace that was only being used sporadically. Their goal? To create a functional work area while also providing a staff lounge for privacy and relaxation, all on a budget, using as much existing furniture as possible. Here’s how I transformed the space.

My approach
I focused on function, comfort, and style. Organization and downsizing were also important given the small space and abundance of furniture.
Maximizing existing resources: I repurposed an existing desk (from another space), monitor, computer chair, and cabinet to keep costs down while reducing waste.
Balancing work and relaxation: The space retained a fully functional standing desk setup, while also offering a cozy spot for staff to step away, recharge, or work privately.
Thoughtful design touches:
- Two bold, patterned sitting chairs add color and create a comfortable lounge feel.
- A gallery wall of office pictures adds personality and including a mirror visually expands the space.
- Another mirror on the storage cabinet helps brighten the room.
- Fake plants bring greenery where natural light is scarce, and one real plant with a LED grow light adds life.
- A stack of puzzles doubles as a small table, holding the markers for the dry erase wall, which replaced the old orange glass wall and now offers a functional space for brainstorming.
- A basket with a yoga mat and blocks encourages staff wellness, offering a small way to relax or stretch during the day.
Smart storage solutions: Hidden organization keeps the space tidy and functional for both work and personal items.

The result is a versatile, stylish, and budget-friendly space that works as both a productive workspace and a small retreat for staff. Even with a limited budget and specific guidelines, thoughtful planning and creativity can make a real difference.
